Social Media and Competency Implications for Learning Professionals
Wednesday, February 16, 1 p.m. ET (12 p.m. CT, 11 a.m. MT, 10 a.m. PT)

Presenter:
Jennifer Naughton, ASTD Senior Director of Credentialing

Session Description
According to Tony Bingham and Maria Conner’s recently-released book “The New Social Learning,” internet-based technologies are dramatically transforming the way people work and learn in their organization, industry, or almost anywhere in the world. They foster new cultures in which content is distributed with minimal restrictions or costs, creating a "virtual water cooler." By putting these emerging social technologies to work for your organization, you can open the door to greater knowledge, a richer learning experience, and an enhanced corporate culture where “brain share” is a way of life.

Hear the preliminary, unpublished results of the latest ASTD Competency Model update. The includes a review of the current and emerging social media trends in the workplace and the competencies learning professionals need to have to effectively apply these techniques. The results of this study are expected to help shape the professional development roadmap for learning professionals for years to come. By leveraging ASTD’s Competency Model, practitioners can prepare for the future faster and align their own professional development plans. In this session, you will learn how to use the results of this research to maximize success and impact in your own organizations and begin to think about implications for your own chapter.

Learning Objectives
1) Be one of the first to know what content changes to expect in the ASTD Competency Model
2) Identify current and emerging social media trends impacting employee development in organizations
3) Begin to create an action plan
